4 Fundamental Things To Do Before Any Interior Painting Project

What do you need to do before painting inside? Does any of it matter? How does prep help your painting project?

If you don’t prepare your walls and take all the necessary steps before an interior painting project, you won’t be happy by the time the paint dries. Trust us when we say that perfection is ALWAYS worth the extra steps.

Today, we’re going to tell you what those steps are so your interior painting project goes off without a hitch. Let’s get started!

1) Gather The Supplies You’ll Need

The first step is finding and gathering the supplies you’ll need to get this job done right.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 Gallons Of Paint [Will Cover 800 ft]

  • Paint Rollers And Brushes

  • A Rag

  • Sheets Or Newspaper For The Floor

  • Painters Tape

  • A Step Ladder

2) Area Preparation

After you’ve gathered all your supplies, the next step is to prepare the room you’ll be painting. That means clearing space, organizing, and getting the space ready for the next step.

Move Furniture

Moving your furniture out of the room isn’t just for the sake of space. It also totally prevents paint drips or splatter from getting onto your furniture. If you can’t remove the furniture, move it away or cover it.

Store Away Valuables

The next step is to clear away all of your valuables. Accidents happen, so be sure to put away all knickknacks, pictures, and other things that are kept either on the wall or close to it.

Lay Down Protective Sheets

Now, you’ll have to lay protective sheets on the floor to keep things clean during the wall prep, also called surface prep.

3) Surface Prep

Now, it’s time to work on preparing your walls for painting. If you just paint over an existing layer, there’s a good chance that your chosen colours won’t look as good. Your walls should be totally clean and smooth before the paint goes on.

Strip/Scrape Walls

The first step of surface prep is to remove the old paint or wallpaper. You may not have to do this if the paint layer is still in good condition. But if there are patches or the paint has started to peel or crack, you’ll need to get as much off as possible.

Drywall Repairs/Patch Things Up

Make any repairs you need, like patching up holes in your wall from picture hangers, scuff marks, and any other cosmetic drywall damage. Wait until the drywall putty is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Sand & Clean Walls

Again, your walls must be as smooth as a sheet of paper for the paint to look its absolute best. You can skip this step if your walls are in good condition. However, make sure that your walls are clean of any dust, dirt, and grime before moving on to primer and paint.

4) Use Primer Before Painting Your Walls

Primer is NEVER a waste of time or money. No matter how much prep work you do or how good the paint is, a primer will always help it look even BETTER. If you’re pressed for time, get a 2 in 1 paint with primer mixed inside.
